Meet Dr. Shah
Pacific Retina is the practice of Sanket U. Shah, M.D., a board-certified Ophthalmologist with a specialization in medical and surgical diseases of the Retina and the Vitreous.
Growing up in a family of physicians in Mumbai, India, Dr. Shah was always inspired to become a medical doctor. He went to medical school at the Seth G. S. Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital – one of the most reputed medical schools in India. During his time there, he developed a keen interest in Ophthalmology, and after graduating, moved to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming an Ophthalmologist. He completed internship at Jacobi Medical Center in Bronx, New York, followed by residency in Ophthalmology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. During residency, he served as chief resident and received several awards including the Merrill Grayson Leadership Award.
He then pursued a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Diseases of the Retina at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received David May II and Abe Meyer Memorial awards. Being passionate about research in addition to clinical work, Dr. Shah has completed two research fellowships – one in Ocular Oncology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and a second one in Retina at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA. With over 35 peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals, and several abstracts, oral, video and poster presentations to his credit, Dr. Shah’s research spans a wide range of topics including automated retinal image analysis, optical coherence tomography, uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, and vitreoretinal interface abnormalities. He has received the National Eye Institute travel grant to present his research. He has served as an investigator on several clinical trials on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration , and prioritizes using the latest research in guiding treatments for his patients.
Dr. Shah is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is an ambassador of patient education and led a project Eye Know More focused on creating educational content for the patients regarding retinal conditions. He likes to give back to the community and has volunteered for eye screening camps organized by the California Lions Friends in Sight. In his free time, Dr. Shah likes hiking, cycling, and cooking.
After practicing for five years in southern California, Dr. Shah moved to the Bay area to start Pacific Retina in Milpitas, with the goal of providing high quality state-of-the-art medical and surgical retina care and a focus on patient education. With strong clinical and surgical background coupled with his wealth of experience, you can be confident in getting the best eye care.
